MINDY'S PERSONAL STORY

I am the mother of two high functioning autistic sons, Adam and Daniel. I understand personally the challenges of raising children with special needs. My sons are my heart. They both have individual needs. From the time they were little, I recognized that they would need extra help. Fighting to get Adam into Early Intervention was my first battle. I could not get a diagnosis for him even though we went from doctor to doctor to find out what was wrong. He did not talk, he did not toilet train (till age 5) and most especially, he screamed in crowded and noisy places. This included family gatherings and birthday parties for friends. He simply could not function in these settings. I felt alone and separated from family and friends.  Oftentimes I cried with frustration, wondering what was wrong with my child and how could I help him.  Finally, after four years of searching for answers, Adam was diagnosed with PDD NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disability Not Otherwise Specified). Otherwise known as autism. This was just the beginning of my journey to help my child.
After 4 ½ years of battles for Adam, my younger son Daniel was born.  The challenges now amplified by two. The diagnosis was easier but he had different issues. Daniel was originally diagnosed with ADHD and medicated improperly. He reacted negatively to so many different meds and we finally realized that he was not Attention deficit, rather, he was high functioning autism with a visual perceptual problem. His vision, which was not functioning at a normal capacity, was causing him to see the world distorted and thus, not allowing him to focus. Once we corrected his vision, his ADHD symptoms disappeared.
The things that are taken for granted, like walking out the door, being in a public space, shopping with your special child, results in mood swings, outbursts, temper tantrums and inability for the family to function. For us as parents, it is challenging, stressful and requires planning and patience. From these challenges I have learned my greatest strengths and now support other mothers to do the same.
My children are my greatest inspiration.  I have discovered new and alternative ways to help my children and my family ranging from Homeopathy, to Naturopathic Doctors, Chiropractic, in addition to essential oils, vitamin therapy and natural cleaning products, etc.
All have been instrumental in helping with their Crohn’s Disease, Sensory Sensitivities, immunology issues, asthma, and thyroid difficulties. This has allowed both my sons to thrive physically, educationally, mentally and emotionally.
With all my personal experiences combined with my professional background, I have helped my own family and now do so for others. Each family I work with receives the same level of care as I do for my own family.
My passion is to help you and your child to thrive educationally as well.
